Subject: I don't hear Phil on Throwing Stones.
Sounds like Bobby only on this track. What do you hear?

Subject: Esau
Bobby and Phil play off each other in a rhythmic pattern more reminiscent of the Midnite's "Book of Rules" than in most Esau's I've heard. It's a refreshing take on this song. Funny how a song's vibe can typify an era. I was bummed when Esau dropped from the rotation; now, looking back, I can appreciate how it captures the bouncy mid-80s elastic band sound and wouldn't have worked as well post-87. 83-87 had unique quality that will always be linked to that "turn-on" time. Fun gems and oddities, here.

Subject: studio demo + rehearsal
I had tracks t01-03 on a cassette as filler long ago (T.Stones, Bucket, Esau.) This Studio Demo stuff is much different qualitatively from the Rehearsal material; more listenable because there's no interruptions.

The Day Tripper from Dec.'84 reminded me of the version I heard live as an encore on 3/31/85 (Portland Me.) The Tom Thumb's is interesting because Phil alters the lyrics interestingly... "Now, all the authorities they just sit around and boast, how they blackmailed the 'King of the Hippies' into leaving his post." And then, "(picking up Angel,?) who just arrived here from Iraq, who looked so fine and colorful at first, but left looking like an also-ran." Phil was apparently in a strange mood at this rehearsal. It's one of those rehearsals where Phil stops everything at times, and tries to change the way they sing it and play it, especially on Tons of Steel.

Great! Off the beaten path = live stuff. This studio has a fanastic Throwing Stones (my all time favorite Dead song) with just the essentials for the tune: Bobby and some basic drums. Nice to hear the basics.

Always fun to listen to these guys practice. I was wondering why they would be practicing Tom Thumbs in the beginning of '84 when they didn't play it till spring of '85. But half the tracks weren't until Dec. '84. Below are the correct dates from the text files:

t01 - Throwin' Stones
2/21/84 Studio Demo - Bob Weir and Linn Drum

t02 - Hell in a Bucket
t03 - Brother Esau
2/25/84 Studio Demo - Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and Linn Drum

t04 - Day Tripper
t05 - Tons of Steel
t06 - Tom Thumb's Blues
12/18/84 GD Rehearsal

Throwin, Bucket & Esau are the ones with Bobby, Phil and the drum machine. Bobby's ability as a guitarist shines through on Esau.

The other three sound like full band rehearsals to me. Def worth the DL to fill out yer CDs.

apparently just bobby, phil and a drum machine. very interesting stuff, the songs in their rawest form. demos apparently, either for trhe rest of the band to mearn from of for potential studio tracking

This IS very interesting. Raw and bluesy and cool enough for anyone. Give her a listen.

I remember having these as filler on an old cassette, only they were a gazillion generations old, with lots of hiss and a lot faster. It's really a treat to hear them at the proper speed with a lot less noise. The Hell In A Bucket is really ballsy, with Phil being WAY up in the mix. Very enjoyable.
